AI’s Rise in Asia

What hath AI wrought? A surge in investments – Asia’s potential jackpot.

Here are some eye-popping numbers that are being invested on AI development & deployment: China US$96 billion, Japan US$67 billion, Singapore US$2.34 billion, South Korea US$1.4 billion, India US$1.25 billion.

A common thread among many Asian nations: strong emphasis on collective safety & societal interests, in contrast to the more individual rights–oriented approaches in Western countries. And a collective effort for Responsible AI involving government agencies, MNCs, SMEs, societal and vulnerable groups. You can download a copy of the report here: https://lnkd.in/eYKqCBUG

“Responsible AI, with related ideas of safety and security, is about designing and deploying AI with guardrails to minimize harm and to mitigate other undesirable risks,” noted Mari Sako, Professor of Management Studies at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. “We know that responsible AI must be dealt with from multiple angles, including technical and organizational ones. But there are unresolved issues, including three gaps that professionals need to address when managing AI implementation.”

Responsibility Gap: Accountability is unclear because AI outcomes depend on multiple actors: developers, builders, and users. Who owns the consequences?

Principles-to-Practice Gap: Ethical guidelines like transparency are hard to apply. What should be disclosed, and to whom?

Goals Gap: AI adoption often lacks alignment. Is the aim efficiency, innovation, cost-cutting, or superhuman accuracy? With competing goals, trade-offs must be made.

We discussed these themes at the Oxford Future of Professionals (OxFOP) roundtable on 30 June 2025 at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. Grateful to Professor Mari Sako for the invitation and to fellow panelists Julian Corj, Risto Uuk, Henry Fingerhut for the insightful dialogue. Thanks also to other panelists: Florence G’SELL, Matthias Holweg, Lea Strohm, Uthman Ali, Mike Buenger, Ian Freeman, Simon Robinson, and compatriot Rajesh Sreenivasan.
